Outline 2 for Stein English 4

I. Intro
A. Hawaiian music has become a symbol of not only a state but serves as a history of its people.
B. Hawaiian music is the traditional style of music of native Hawaiians mixed in with western elements like the slide guitar.
C. Hawaiian music has served as a window into the culture and world view of Hawaiians.
II Body
A. Hawaiian music can be identified by the laid back and relaxed feel given off by the traditional Hawaiian instrument, the Ukulele. Hawaiian music sometimes includes lyrics sang in the Hawaiian language.
B. Hawaiian music has been used to represent the laid back and relaxed view of the world that Hawaiians have become famous for.
1. Hawaiians have a saying, "shaka" which means translates to hang loose. This idea is represented with the laid back vibe it has.
2. Hawaiian music has come to represent a sense of identity for people with Hawaiian heritage.
C. Other places in the US have a certain soundtrack, and like the others Hawaii's soundtrack is all its own.
D. The introduction of the slide guitar, though not a traditional Hawaiian instrument, has become a part of Hawaiian music.
F. Though the most famous song identified with the islands is the Hawaii 5-0 theme song, it was written in the style of the surf rock of Southern California.
G. Hawaiian music has been used in the national media in a variety of ways.
1. On the new incarnation of Hawaii 5-0, Hawaiian music is used to allow viewers the sense of being in Hawaii.
2. In films, Hawaiian music has been used to portray feelings of closure and happiness, eg. Finding Forrester.

III. Conclusion
A. Hawaiian music has become a way for Hawaiians to maintain their heritage and express it to the world.
